THE HOLIDAY EDIT

Our Favorite Christmas Candles by Scent Family

Start with the scent family, not the brand, because pine outsells every other holiday category at our West Hollywood counter from October through December and it is not close. Balsam fir and pine smell like a just-cut tree: green, resinous, a little cold, and best in living rooms and entryways where the size of the room matches the throw. Nest Birchwood Pine layers white pine and fir balsam over musk and amber, which is why it reads warm rather than sharp; LAFCO Balsam Black Pepper takes the same forest and adds eucalyptus, rosemary, and cedarwood, so it lands brighter. Both are what we hand to anyone who says they miss having a real tree.

Warm spice and hearth scents do a different job. Cinnamon, clove, and woodsmoke layer into kitchens and dining rooms, where they add to the food instead of fighting it. Diptyque Feu de Bois is the purest version of that idea, a lit-fireplace scent with no sweetness in it, and the strongest winter pick on our Diptyque candles shelf. Trudon Gabriel is its dressed-up cousin: leather and cashmere wood over candied chestnut. For gifting, Darren on our floor steers anyone unsure of the recipient's taste toward pine and cedar every time, because the misses we hear about in January are almost always a sweet gourmand given to someone who burns woods.

Formats matter more in December than in any other month. Three-wick and oversized Christmas candles carry scent across an open living room through a long dinner without a relight, and the 3-wick candles and large candles collections cover that job across brands. Boxed candle gift sets and the seasonal holiday gift sets arrive ready to hand over, which is most of the work when the list is long. Sort this page by price when a budget matters; the spread runs from small votives to multi-wick statement pieces. Past New Year's, the Nest candles and housewarming candle gifts collections carry the same scent logic into the rest of winter.

What Makes a Scent Smell Like Christmas

Christmas scent is really three families doing different jobs. Fir balsam and pine resin read as the tree itself: green, sharp, and cold-air clean. Cinnamon, clove, and incense are the hearth family, warmer and better suited to rooms where food and conversation happen. Smoked woods and amber sit underneath both, the quiet base that keeps a holiday candle from turning into a bakery. Most of the season's best candles pull from two families at once, which is why a good pine still feels warm. If you store holiday candles for next year, keep them lidded, out of sunlight, and away from heat; wax holds fragrance far better than most people expect.
