Max Benjamin Candles

Max Benjamin candles are handmade in a single studio in Enniskerry, a village in Ireland’s Wicklow Mountains, which is rarer than it sounds: most candles at this price are poured in large contract factories, not by the family whose name is on the glass. The brand was started by Orla Van den Bergh and named after her twin sons, Max and Ben, and her brothers David and Mark run it with her today. Every candle is natural soy wax with a cotton wick, poured into smoked-grey glass stamped with the house motif, and it burns clean and soot-free for around fifty hours. The first thing customers notice at our West Hollywood counter is the glass itself, which reads more like a piece of barware than a candle.

There are three Max Benjamin scents on our shelf and each one is a place. Dodici is the one people come back for: lemon and marjoram over Tuscan lavender and rosemary oil, a bright herbal citrus that smells like a Sicilian street at night. Acqua Viva is the Amalfi coast, mandarin and orange lifted with cardamom and pepper and grounded in musk, amber, and cedarwood, the most complex of the three. French Linen Water is the softest, lavender and sweet orange and petitgrain, the one we hand people who find most florals too sweet. Each scent comes as one of our soy candles, a reed diffuser, and a clever car diffuser, so you can run the same fragrance from the kitchen to the commute. The reed diffusers throw quietly and last for months without a flame.

We added Max Benjamin because it does something most of our brands do not: it makes a genuinely giftable candle and matching diffuser set under sixty dollars that still feels considered, from the weight of the glass to the soot-free burn.
