Large & Extra-Large Diptyque Candles: A Curator's Size Guide

A large Diptyque candle is a different object than the classic 190g jar most people start with. The five-wick 1500g version throws scent across an entire open-plan living room, burns for roughly 150 hours, and doubles as a sculptural piece long after the wax is gone. At Candle Delirium, the world's largest home fragrance store, we carry the full range of large and extra-large Diptyque candles, and after two decades of selling every size the house makes, we can tell you exactly which one belongs in which room.

This guide covers the sizes, the burn times, the prices, and the honest answer to the question we get most often: are the big ones actually worth it?

Every Diptyque Candle Size, Explained

Diptyque makes candles in four main sizes, and the jump between them is bigger than the numbers suggest. Here is the full range as we stock it in West Hollywood:

  • Classic (190g, single wick): the iconic oval-label jar, around 50 to 60 hours of burn. Best for a bathroom, a desk, or a bedside table.
  • Medium (300g, single wick): roughly 90 hours, a noticeably stronger throw. The right size for a home office or a mid-size bedroom.
  • Large (600g, three wicks): built for living rooms and open kitchens. Three wicks mean the scent fills the space in minutes, not hours.
  • Very Large / Extra Large (1500g, five wicks): the 1.5kg terracotta-style vessel, designed for indoor and outdoor use, burning around 150 hours. This is the one people mean when they search for the biggest Diptyque candle.

The five-wick 1500g size is the star of this guide. It's the format Diptyque designed for large rooms, entryways, and patios, and it's the one we sell most to customers furnishing a new home or hosting through the holidays.

The Best Large Diptyque Candles, by Room

We carry nine of the five-wick 1500g candles, which is the deepest extra-large Diptyque selection you will find online. These are the ones our team reaches for first, matched to where they actually perform.

Best overall, for a living room: Diptyque Baies Very Large 5-Wick (1500g, $440). Black currant and Bulgarian rose, the most-copied scent in the entire luxury candle category. Five wicks carry it through a 400 square foot room on the first burn. This is the single most-requested large candle on our floor every November.

Best for cozy winter rooms: Diptyque Feu de Bois Very Large 5-Wick (1500g, $440). Smoked wood and cedar, the scent of a fireplace without the fireplace. It fills a den or a media room with woodsmoke in a way the classic size simply cannot reach.

Best floral, for an entryway: Diptyque Figuier Very Large 5-Wick (1500g, $440). Fig leaves, wood, and green sap. Guests smell it the moment the door opens, which is exactly why we recommend fig for foyers.

Best for indoor and outdoor use: Diptyque Citronnelle 5-Wick Indoor/Outdoor (1500g). Lemongrass and orange blossom, built to hold its own on a patio against open air and a light breeze. The only one of the nine designed first for outdoors.

Ambre, Roses, Tubereuse, and the 34 Boulevard Saint Germain house blend round out the five-wick range, all at the same 1500g size. The full lineup lives in our Diptyque candle collection.

Are Large Diptyque Candles Worth the Price?

This is the question every customer asks before spending $440 on a candle, and the honest answer depends on your room. The math isn't as lopsided as it looks. A classic 190g Diptyque runs about $40 to $90 and burns 50 to 60 hours. The 1500g five-wick is $440 and burns roughly 150 hours, but it is moving almost eight times the wax with five wicks instead of one, which is why it actually scents a large space rather than just perfuming the air a few feet from the jar.

For a small bedroom or a bathroom, the classic size is the smarter buy, and we'll tell you so at the counter. For a living room, an open kitchen, or any space over 300 square feet, the large candle is the only Diptyque format that does the job. The single-wick jar will smell lovely on the table and never reach the far wall. After 20 years of watching customers come back, the people who buy the five-wick for a big room don't return them. The people who buy a classic size for a great room often come back for the large one.

How to Care for a Five-Wick Diptyque Candle

A large multi-wick candle rewards a little attention, and a few habits keep all five wicks burning evenly through 150 hours.

  • First burn matters most. Let it burn two to three hours the first time, long enough for the entire top layer to liquefy edge to edge. Stop early and you risk a permanent tunnel down the middle.
  • Trim every wick to about a quarter inch before each burn. Five untrimmed wicks produce soot and an uneven flame. Trimmed wicks burn cleaner and slower.
  • Light all five, every time. Lighting only the center wicks wastes the outer wax and shortens the candle's life.
  • Keep it out of drafts. Five flames near a breeze flicker and smoke. The Citronnelle indoor/outdoor version is the exception, built to handle moving air.

Once the wax is finished, the 1500g vessel is designed to be cleaned out and reused. Customers keep them as planters, utensil holders, and catchalls. It is part of the value most people overlook.

Where to Buy Large Diptyque Candles

Candle Delirium has carried Diptyque for over two decades, and we stock the full five-wick 1500g range in our West Hollywood store and online, with the kind of side-by-side comparison no single brand boutique offers. The fastest way to choose the right large Diptyque is to smell a few in person, and our Los Angeles floor is one of the only places in the country where you can compare the extra-large sizes head to head. For the complete scent-by-scent breakdown of the standard sizes, see our guide to the most popular Diptyque candles.
